Mahoutsukai Sally is the oldest magical girl shows there is. It first aired in the 1960's, and since then has had several different incarnations. Like many magical girl series that followed it, this series is about a young girl from a magical world who spends some time on Earth. Sally is a witch who is interested in the Earth and wants to learn more about it, so she secretly travels to Earth with her younger brother and lives among us. She tries to keep her identity as a magician a secret, and she often gets into scrapes where she must use her magic to try to fix things. There was no big evil force that Sally was trying to fight. This element of magical girl shows was developed many years later. Instead, Sally simply used her magic to help people and to get out of unusual situations. Apparently this series was originally inspired by the US television series 'Bewitched' and in turn, Mahoustukai Sally inspired the creation of countles other magical girl shows like Comet-san, Sweet Mint, and Minky Momo.
