Pretty Samy is a Magical Girl parody of sorts. The Pretty Samy character originated in another halarious anime series called Tenchi Muyo. Pretty Samy makes her first appearance in the Tenchi Muyo: Mihoshi Special OVA, in which Galaxy Police Officer Mihoshi tells a tale of how she and her partner Kiyone defeated space pirates and rescued Tenchi. Mihoshi's story cast the characters in the series into the roles of the people in her past adventure, so that the things the characters do are part of an alternate world storyline of sorts.
At any rate, when the Tenchi cast of characters are in dire straits at the mercy of the diabolical Dr Washuu, the cute young girl of the group, Sasami, transforms herself into the Magical Girl Pretty Samy and saves them all with her magic of Love. Both her transformation sequence and powers are very stereotypically Magical Girl. Also, at the end of this OVA, during the ED credits, there is another quick Samy adventure in which she saves her love, Tenchi, from the clutches of an evil, whip-wielding Kiyone.
The Pretty Samy character from this OVA was so popular, that she made some appearances in the Tenchi Muyo TV series, and then got some OVAs of her own. The Pretty Samy in the OVAs is a bit different from the one in the Mihoshi Special, in that it starts with the origin of the Magical Girl character. This OVA also stars therest of the Tenchi Muyo cast, each character placed into yet another alternate reality role. Tenchi is now Sasami's brother, Tsunami is now a real and seperate identity from Sasami, and all the characters live in the middle of a city and attend school.
There was also a Pretty Sammy TV series which was released in the US as 'Magical Project S' In it they have created yet another new Tenchi timeline. This time Sasami is Sasami Kawai, a cute grade school student who is chosen by Tsunami to become a magical girl, and to tip the balance of good and evil in Tsunami's home world with every good deed she does. Sasami is now an only child. Tenchi does appear in the series, but so far I have only seen him once, as a Sentai manga creator/show producer guy. The rest of the Tenchi cast are placed into roles. Mihoshi is now Sasami's teacher (egads!), Kiyone is the teacher for the class next door, and Washuu is Sasami's science teacher and nextdoor neighbor. Sasami has the coolest parents in the TV show! Her dad has to be one of the coolest anime men out there. Sasami's mom runs a CD store and often makes Sasami make deliveries. In the TV series, Sasami must also fight Pixy Misa. Sasami's costume has been redesigned, and her huge magic wand has been changed a bit as well. Once again, Ryo-oh-ki has become Sammy's talking pet to guide her and hold onto her magic wand when she's not using it. The monsters that Pretty Sami fights are so obviously borrowed from Sailor Moon it is funny =) Also, Pretty Sammy's main attack has to be one of the most impressive power-up-attacks I have seen in a long time! | ||
Sasami is a typical cute school girl with large pink eyes and blue hair that she always puts up into two long ponytails. (somewhat reminiscent of Sailor Moon's hairstyle). She is a good student, but has a hard time getting to school on time, due to the daily chaos that surrounds her. Sasami's older brother, Tenchi is currently the target of affection by two outspoken girls, Aeka and Ryoko. These girls compete every morning for Tenchi's attention, and their anctics usually cause all of them to get to school afte rthe bell rings, leaving them locked out for the day. Meanwhile, far away in another world, a Magical world, two women are competing for the right to become that world's ruler. A council is in the process of judging the two women, and choses Tsunami, a beautiful woman with blue hair and intelligent pink eyes to become the next ruler. However, before she can take the throne, she must pass a sort of test in which she must select a person from Earth and give them a magical girl alter ego. The girl Tsunami chooses is none other than Sasami... What follows is a halarious adventure involving a rival magical girl, Pixy Misa, a new resident in the area named Washuu, and two large gelatanous blobs fighting. Pretty Samy the Magical Girl has her large magical wand, a club like thing with a heart on the top of it. Her transformation sequence is very similar to that of Sailor Moon.
