"Hanazakari no Kimitachi E"
(For You in Full Blossom)
by Hisaya NAKAJO
Hana to Yume Comics, 1997
Yay! It's another manga by Hisaya NAKAJO! I love her work! Her lines are so clean and solid, and the backgrounds are detailed too! There is something about the way she draws people that really appeals to me. Her characters are always so stylish too :) Not only is the art great, the stories are cute! ^_^ I like how she keeps up the romantic tension while giving us lots of humorous side stories and funny characters. This has become one of my favorite manga series ever. I like it so much that I created an entire page devoted to it. It can be found *here*.
The story begins with a high school girl named Mizuki deciding to return to Japan after living and studying in America. Apparently she was on the track team at her school here. One of her reasons for going back to Japan is to see her sports idol, a guy by the name of Izumi SANO. Mizuki had seen a video of Sano pole-vaulting, and he instantly got hero status in Mizuki's eyes. There is one slight catch- Sano goes to an all-guys boarding school. Yep, you can guess where this is headed... That's right. Mizuki wants to go to the same school as Sano, so she cuts her long hair short, gets a boy's school uniform, and enters the school as a new male transfer student. And wow, LUCKY! Sano is in her class! She quickly runs into him, and manages to to keep herself from being a totally drooling fangirl, but barely. The new 'boy' sure seems awfully friendly though. Sano turns out to be really cute, and the quiet, serious type. Way cool. But he isn't the only one Mizuki meets. There is another guy, Nakatsu, who attaches himself as Mizuki's friend. Nakatsu is the loud, enthusiastic, rough and tumble type. There other people she has to deal with as well- A very observant school doctor, the guys in the dorm, etc. Okay, so that is the set up! There is the usual matter of Mizuki trying to keep her gender a secret, her growing attraction for one of the guys, etc. I should also point out one amusing thing- teh school they all go to is Osaka Gakuen, and almost all of the characters are named after train stations in Osaka ^_^ As of Spring, 2002, the series is still running in Hana to Yume magazine, and there are at least 17 volumes of the manga out. Yay!
