"Kimi wa Petto!"
(You're a Pet!)
by Yayoi OGAWA
Kodansha Comics, 2000
There were two main things that attracted me to this manga- the title, "Kimi wa Petto" - "You're a Pet" and the fact that the heroine of the story is shown on the cover eating Pocky. Now I am wondering which member of the food-sharing couple pictured here is the pet, and who is the master. Hmmm.... and I really love Pocky.. ok, I'll get it! Heheh, it's as simple as that. As it turned out, this mangaka uses an art style I am not all that fond of (It's something about the way the eyes and lips are drawn...) however the story seems interesting enough to summarize here.
This is the story of a girl and her pet bishounen. Hey, what a great idea! Where can I get one? Anyway, the girl in question is named Sumire. She is quite a strong character, very take-charge and opinionated. She is also really tall. This makes dating somewhat difficult for her, as she is taller than most of the men she goes out with. One day when returning home from another unsuccessful romantic encounter, she finds a boy on her doorstep. He appears drunk, and passed out. Sumire takes him in, and decides to keep him as her pet.
What?! At first this story reminded me of another one I summarize on this site called "Watashi no mono" but there are some differences. Sumire doesn't chain her pet bishounen up, he's a willing participant in this scenario. Sumire renames her bishounen "Momo" after a beloved dog she once owned. Momo is very devoted to Sumire, and admires her very much. Their relationship is unusual. He lives with her, and she takes care of him, just like a dog. She bathes him, grooms him, and feeds him. She doesn't really make him do any work for himself. However there is one thing he can do for her- provide protection. How unusual! Most of this volume is about Sumire juggling her relationship at home with Momo, and her relationship with her very sexy and macho boyfriend. Momo cares very much for Sumire, but will it ever turn into anything more than a master-pet relationship?
