Um, okay. I am not sure if myself or my site would be considered an expert source, though ^^ You might also try Matt Thorn's shoujo site (I believe I link to it on my links section)

Argh, why are the majority of them blonde with blue eyes? Irritating, to say the least.
I read that Makoto (leading shoujo mangaka of his time) was inspired by a European girl he saw after WWII with those features, and "wanted to draw her" hence, so much of his early work had this theme of little white girls being innocent. I think it's safe to say he went on to influence a lot of other artists.
Just seems like an obsession, if you ask me! I wonder if he had seen a little girl with brown eyes and an afro, if he would have been moved the same way?
Anyway, your observations and comments were spot-on and hilarious! I will have to poke around your site now ^__^

Alright, this is going to sound weird, but would you mind me referencing your website or pictures for a paper I'm writing on interpreting contemporary Japanese fiction in terms of manga? It focuses on the novella called "Kitchen" by Banana Yoshimoto. I've been looking for pictures and references to shoujo manga from this time period, and your site is fairly comprehensive.

Haha, I liked your article a lot! It is so true.
About dark haired girls, I don't know if these are from the 70's or 80's but the heroine of Red River (Anatolia story) and Kakan no Madonna have got black hair.
