Title: Mayonaka Express
Flower Comics, 2008
I am adding two summaries by this author today. I liked both books very much! I just discovered her, and I need to find her other series! This is a one-shot volume containing four cute and romantic short stories. The first two stories have a magical or supernatural twist, while the second two are more ‘normal’ school-age stories.
The first story (which is related to the illustration on the cover) is my favorite. HARADA Azusa is scared. Scared of this boy she sees every day on the train to and from school. She doesn’t know how she always manages to have the misfortune of ending up on the same train as him, but she wishes she could get away. He is kind of scary looking, rude, and always listens to loud music and talks loudly on his cellphone. He intimidates the shy Azusa. However, things get scarier when he rushes after her one day and says her name! How did he know her name? Azusa runs, trying to get away from him, and he chases her. But then she trips and falls onto the train tracks!
The next story is about a girl named Saki who is very frustrated with her boyfriend Fumio. He is obsessed with space ships and UFOs and other otaku things. When her birthday comes around, and he forgot about it and went to some otaku event instead, that is the last straw! She breaks up with him and tosses him out the door! When she later asks him which he likes better, Science Fiction stuff or her, he actually has to think about it! Angry, Saki runs off and walks around by herself. Then a strange guy hits on her, but before Saki can get rid of him, a strange guy appears and grabs Saki and drags her away! Saki is thankful for the intrusion, but would like to go along her way now, thanks, but the guy is persistent. He wants to go eat with her and spend the day together! Who the heck is this strange guy? He is much older, and very messy-looking, yet friendly. She reluctantly agrees, and they actually have a good time that day, but things come crashing down when Saki sees her Fumio at a store with another girl. A cute girl! Even worse, this older guy she has been with all day has been lying to her too! He has a locked with another girl’s picture in it! Another two-timer!
The next story is about A girl named Aoi-chan who has a very strained relationship with her mother ever since her father and older brother died. It is like her mother only cared about her brother and is unhappy being left with Aoi. She is always so cold to Aoi! Fed up with all of this, Aoi doesn’t know what to do. Then things change when she meets a guy named Norimasa. He is tall and handsome, and is really interested in Aoi! He is like a prince to her. When things with her mother get extremely strained, Aoi has a great idea- run away with Norimasa! But will things go as she planned? She is in for quite a few surprises!
Finally, we have a cute story about two classmates who do NOT seem to get along. In fact, the whole class is pretty much in a struggle of boys vs the girls. But in particular, Asako, the class committee chairman, and Ryou, the vice chairman fight a lot! But it is all really just an act! Ryou and Asako love each other and are dating, but because of the war going on in their class, they cannot reveal their true feelings for each other!
