Anime

These are the lucky shoujo manga that have been made into anime! Usually it’s a full anime TV series, but sometimes it’s just a brief one-shot OVA special. I am not including series where the special is just scenes from the manga set to music. I’m talkin’ real animation here.

  • DNAngel, by SUGISAKI Yukiru DNAngel, by SUGISAKI Yukiru Title:DNAngel Author:SUGISAKI Yukiru ISBN# 4-04-924701-1 Asuka Comics, 1999 I was so thrilled when I finally managed to track down this manga! I had seen the artwork on pencil boards, and on a quickly-disappearing artbook at Kinokuniya, but I had no idea what the series was about or where I could get some of it at! Finally, after what seems like forever, Kinokuniya managed to get in a few volumes of this manga, and of course I snapped them right up! The art ...
  • Fruits Basket, by TAKAYA Natsuki Fruits Basket, by TAKAYA Natsuki Title:Fruits Basket Author:TAKAYA Natsuki ISBN: 4-592-17161-6 Hana to Yume Comics, 1999 If I had not originally seen this series in the manga magazine ‘Hana to Yume’, I probably would have passed this series by. The cover art on the Tankoubon, while not bad exactly, is not very thrilling either. The covers are boring, actually. And because I pick most of the manga for this page purely by shallow means (its cover ^_^;) it is more than likely I would have never heard ...
  • Gokinjo Monogatari by YAZAWA Ai Gokinjo Monogatari, by YAZAWA Ai Title:Gokinjo Monogatari (Neighborhood Story) Author:YAZAWA Ai ISBN: 4-08-853820-X Ribon Comics, 1995 Once again this manga series isn’t quite random, as there is an anime series made off of it, but perhaps that anime isn’t quite well known yet as most others? Ah well, I like the manga so much I decided to include it here :) Gokinjo Monogatari or ‘Neighborhood Story’ is one totally wild manga :) The art style is so incredibly insane, and the character’s clothing styles is so retro it’s ...
  • Gokusen, by MORIMOTO Kozueko Gokusen, by MORIMOTO Kozueko Title:Gokusen Author:MORIMOTO Kozueko ISBN# 4-08-862503-X You Comics, 2000 I probably would not have purchased this manga series if I hadn’t watched the live action drama first. Boy I am glad I did, because I am now hooked! The art style in this is not something I am usually attracted to. There are only 3 nice-looking characters in this series. Everyone else looks kind freaky shounen-manga scary. Vaguely Initial-D-ish. But the story is a lot of fun, and that is what hooked me ...
  • Hime-chan no Ribbon, by MIZUSAWA Megumi Hime-chan no Ribbon, by MIZUSAWA Megumi Title: Hime-chan no Ribbon (Hime-chan’s Ribbon) Author: MIZUSAWA Megumi ISBN# 4-08-853561-8 Ribon Mascot Comics 1991 It was the announcement that this series, a long-time favorite of mine, was going to be remade by a new author, that prompted me to include the original series on my site today. Wow, I can’t believe I never managed to talk about this one here before! I guess I sometimes assume some of the classics are already so well-known by everyone, that I don’t really need to talk ...
  • Itazura na Kiss, by TADA Kaoru Itazura na Kiss, by TADA Kaoru Title:Itazura na Kiss (Mischevious Kiss) Author:TADA Kaoru ISBN: 4-08-849727-9 Margaret Comics, 1991 Here is a wonderful shoujo manga series that I can’t believe I have neglected to add to my page! This is such a fun manga, and one of my favorites! The plot for this may seem similar now to a lot of other series I talk about on this page, but remember that it first began back in 1991. I figure that back then the plot idea may not have been ...
  • Kaichou wa Maid-sama, by FUJIWARA Hiro Kaichou wa Maid-sama, by FUJIWARA Hiro Title:Kaichou wa Maid-sama English Title: Class President is a Maid! Author:FUJIWARA Hiro ISBN# 4-592-18431-9 Hana to Yume Comics, 2006 I just loved the cover of this manga. Yeah, I know, it obviously cashes in on the whole maid fetish thing that has been so popular these days, but I can’t help it. The art is just so clean and cute and attractive ^_^ It helps that the guy is hot, too! (I am so shallow…) As far as I know, this is the first ...
  • Kaikan Phrase, by SHINJO Mayu Kaikan Phrase, by SHINJO Mayu Title:Kaikan Phrase (Sensual Phrase) Author:SHINJO Mayu ISBN# 4-09-136835-2 Flower Comics, 1997 Woah, I can’t believe they actually made an anime series about this! I really can’t believe it! :) I guess with the fangirl-success of WeiB Kreuz, they figured another anime with a group of really cute bishounen guys who sing (well ok, in WeiB they were asassins, but they sing on the cds..) would be a success ^_^ And the guys in Kaikan Phrase are CUTE! It is just that this manga ...
  • Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, by TANEMURA Arina Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, by TANEMURA Arina Title:Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne Author:TANEMURA Arina ISBN: 4-08-856100-7 Ribon Comics, 1998 Okay, I figured I might as well include this series on my page because I like it so much, and I think I mention it a few times during summaries for other series, most notably the other series by Arina TANEMURA on this site, Ion. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is a magical girl story that is currently running in the shoujo manga monthly Ribon as well as on TV as an anime series. ...
  • Kamisama Hajimemashita, by SUZUKI Julietta Kamisama Hajimemashita, by SUZUKI Julietta Title: Kamisama Hajimemashita Author: SUZUKI Julietta ISBN# 978-4-592-18506-2 Hana to Yume Comics, 2008 Ahhh, too cute, too cute! Fox ears and a kitsune mask on a cover will almost guarantee a purchase by me :) SUZUKU Julietta is the author of another series I enjoyed, Akuma to Dolche and one that I look forward to reading eventually, Karakuri Odette. I really like her art style. It is simple but pretty, and there are some really funny facial expressions and scary demons too. This ...
  • Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou, by TSUDA Masami Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou, by TSUDA Masami Title:Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou Author:TSUDA Masami ISBN# 4-592-12065-5 Hana to Yume Comics, 1996 Yep, I freely admit this one isn’t even remotely a Random Shoujo Manga ^^ I had already fallen completely in love with the anime version of this series that ran recently in Japan. The anime for Karekano (as this series has been nicknamed) was done by those mega-popular people over at GAINAX, who were responsible for Evangelion. But unlike Eva, in Karekano they have taken a totally different story and ...
  • Kimi ni Todoke, by SHIINA Karuho Kimi ni Todoke, by SHIINA Karuho Title: Kimi ni Todoke (Reaching You) Author: SHIINA Karuho ISBN# 978-4-08-846061-1 Margaret Comics, 2006 Ahh, I can’t believe I haven’t included this manga on this site sooner! It is such a good series! I originally saw this series at my local bookstore a few months ago, but I never picked it up because at the time there were already 5 volumes out, and I was sort of reluctant to start a series that would require that much of a financial investment. However, this manga ...
  • Mimi wo Sumaseba, by HIIRAGI Aoi Mimi wo Sumaseba, by HIIRAGI Aoi Title:Mimi wo Sumaseba Author:HIIRAGI Aoi ISBN# 4-08-853515-4 Ribon Mascot Comics, 1990 Yes, you may recognize the title of this manga. ‘Mimi wo Sumaseba’ is also the name of a Studio Ghibli animated movie, and yep, that movie was based on this shoujo manga! I am not exactly sure why, out of all the shoujo manga out there, Ghibli decided to make a movie from this manga, but I am glad they did. ‘Mimi wo Sumaseba’ (the English title of the movie is ‘Whispers ...
  • Oshare Kozou ni Hanamaru, by AZUMI Tsueko Oshare Kozou ni Hanamaru by AZUMI Tsueko Title:Oshare Kozou ni Hanamaru (AKA: The Fashion Boy is Cool) (AKA: Flower Rings for the Fashion Boy) Author:AZUMI Tsueko ISBN# 4-08-849358-3 Margaret Comics, 1988 I actually purchased this manga as a result of another shoujo manga page, so it isnt exactly ‘random’ but it’s a fun shoujo series, so I figured that it wouldn’t hurt to plug the series here too! I found this by surprise (I wasn’t out looking for it, I knew it existed, but was totally surprised when I saw it ...
  • Sukitte Iina yo., by HAZUKI Kanae Sukitte Iina yo., by HAZUKI Kanae Title: Sukitte Iina yo (Say “I Love You”) Author: HAZUKI Kanae ISBN# 978-4-06-365517-9 KC Dessert Comics 2008 As with almost every series on this site, I picked up this series because I really liked the cover artwork. I ended up grabbing volumes 1 and 2 at the same time, and now I am anxiously awaiting the release of volume 3. This is a charming series. I really like the art style in it. It is clean and sort of stylish. Yes, all the characters ...
  • Tokimeki Tonight, by IKENO Koi Tokimeki Tonight, by IKENO Koi Title: Tokimeki Tonight Author: IKENO Koi ISBN# 4-08-853247-3 Ribon Mascot Comics 1982 Here is a series I enjoyed enough to track down the whole set. I hesitated a little to talk about it here, because it is another older series, but I decided I like this one enough to talk about it anyway! I think classic shoujo series should get more love. Often they are passed up by licensing companies as “too risky” because they think kids these days can’t handle or won’t buy ...
  • Tonari no Kaibutsukun, by Robico Tonari no Kaibutsukun, by Robico Title: Tonari no Kaibutsukun Author: Robico ISBN# 978-4-06-365540-7 KC Dessert Comics, 2009 Those of you who have read this page for a while will know that I am pretty shallow and have very little willpower when it comes to series with cute boys on the cover. I am even worse when it comes to series that have a boy in a collar on the cover ^_^ Therefore, when I saw this book at the store, you know it was in my ‘buy’ pile very ...
