English!

These are series that have been licensed for official release in English in the US. Usually when I summarize stuff, it has not been licensed yet, and I am reading the raw book in Japanese. However, I am finding that a number of titles I talk about are getting picked up by US companies (yay!). I’m not very good at keeping up with all the titles that get licensed though ^^;;

  • A Drunken Dream, by HAGIO Moto A Drunken Dream, by HAGIO Moto Title: A Drunken Dream and Other Stories Author: HAGIO Moto (with interview and article by Matt Thorn) ISBN# 978-4-592-18590-1 Fantagraphics, 2010 As you may know from viewing my section on 70′s and 80′s shoujo manga, I am a big fan of classic shoujo works. I love all shoujo, really, and find it fascinating to learn the history of the art form. Therefore, when Fantagraphics announced they would be publishing a collection of manga works by HAGIO Moto, I was ecstatic. HAGIO Moto is one ...
  • Aa Itoshi no Bancho-sama, by FUJIKATA Mayu Aa Itoshi no Bancho-sama, by FUJIKATA Mayu Title: Aa Itoshi no Bancho-sama (My Darling! Miss Bancho) Author: FUJIKATA Mayu JAPAN ISBN# 978-4-592-18854-3 USA ISBN# 978-1-40122055-6 Japan: Hana to Yume Comics, 2006 USA: CMX Comics, 2010 I was very happy when I heard that this series was going to be licensed, because it is a fun and sweet little story that deserves more attention. I own this series in Japanese, but when CMX sent me a copy of volume 1 of the English release, I decided to finally talk about the series here and compare ...
  • Akuma de sourou, by TAKANASHI Mitsuba Akuma de sourou, by TAKANASHI Mitsuba Title:Akuma de sourou (The Devil Does Exist) Author:TAKANASHI Mitsuba ISBN: 4-08-847094-X Margaret Comics, 1999 I had been seeing this series pictured on the cover of issues of Betsuma Margaret for awhile, but I had never actually bought an issue of it, even though the art for this series looked interesting. However when the first collected volume of this series finally appeared at my local Kinokuniya, I finally caved in and bought it, having no idea what the series is about. I am glad ...
  • Alichino, by SHUREI Kouyu Alichino, by SHUREI Kouyu Title:Alichino Author:SHUREI Kouyu ISBN# 4-8342-6101-8 Eyes Comics, 1999 Yep, no doubt about it here. I purchased Alichino because of the awesome cover art ^^ Click on the cover image to see what it looks like without the yellow translucent jacket on it. And I was thrilled to discover that almost every page of this manga has equally amazing artwork! The detail shown in the character designs and backgrounds is outstanding! I don’t even have to have any idea whatsoever as to what ...
  • Beauty Pop, by ARAI Kyoko Beauty Pop, by ARAI Kyoko Title:Beauty Pop Author:ARAI Kyoko ISBN# 4-09-138382-3 Ciao Comics, 2003 I picked this one up after deciphering a plot summary on a japanese site. It sounded very very silly, and I couldn’t resist! And yes, shiny bright colors on a manga cover attract me. Wooo shiny colors! Heh. The art in this feels very simple and cute to me. Yeah, not a very good description, but it’s the best I can come up with at the moment. I have to wonder where mangaka ...
  • Cross Oneself, by AMAKAWA Sumiko Cross Oneself, by AMAKAWA Sumiko Title:Cross Oneself Author:AMAKAWA Sumiko ISBN# 4-04-924681-3 Asuka Comics, 1999 Summary by Rurichan Ok, first off I’ll admit that I got Cross-Oneself by Amakawa Sumiko just for the pictures of Takara. But the story itself is very interesting. Cross Oneself is like a magical girl story but with a guy as the main character. In fact it’s a holy bishonen story! Cross is about a very young catholic priest named Amakusa Takara who goes to a catholic high school, and uses his gift of holy powers ...
  • Fruits Basket, by TAKAYA Natsuki Fruits Basket, by TAKAYA Natsuki Title:Fruits Basket Author:TAKAYA Natsuki ISBN: 4-592-17161-6 Hana to Yume Comics, 1999 If I had not originally seen this series in the manga magazine ‘Hana to Yume’, I probably would have passed this series by. The cover art on the Tankoubon, while not bad exactly, is not very thrilling either. The covers are boring, actually. And because I pick most of the manga for this page purely by shallow means (its cover ^_^;) it is more than likely I would have never heard ...
  • Hanazakari no Kimitachi E, by NAKAJO Hisaya Hanazakari no Kimitachi E, by NAKAJO Hisaya Title:Hanazakari no Kimitachi E (For You in Full Blossom) Author:NAKAJO Hisaya ISBN# 4-592-11602-X Hana to Yume Comics, 1997 Yay! It’s another manga by Hisaya NAKAJO! I love her work! Her lines are so clean and solid, and the backgrounds are detailed too! There is something about the way she draws people that really appeals to me. Her characters are always so stylish too :) Not only is the art great, the stories are cute! ^_^ I like how she keeps up the romantic tension ...
  • Hot Gimmick, by AIHARA Miki Hot Gimmick, by AIHARA MikiTitle:Hot Gimmick Author: AIHARA Miki ISBN# 4-09-135381-9 Flower Comics, 2001 I bought this manga up because of the very eyecatching cover. The art style looks attractive, and the heroine looked like the type who is strong and sassy. Very cute! Unfortunately, she turned out to be a bit of a doormat, but I still love the series ^_^;;; The interior has a clean look, and a somewhat unique look to it. There is something about the way the manga author draws some expressions ...
  • Itazura na Kiss, by TADA Kaoru Itazura na Kiss, by TADA Kaoru Title:Itazura na Kiss (Mischevious Kiss) Author:TADA Kaoru ISBN: 4-08-849727-9 Margaret Comics, 1991 Here is a wonderful shoujo manga series that I can’t believe I have neglected to add to my page! This is such a fun manga, and one of my favorites! The plot for this may seem similar now to a lot of other series I talk about on this page, but remember that it first began back in 1991. I figure that back then the plot idea may not have been ...
  • Kaikan Phrase, by SHINJO Mayu Kaikan Phrase, by SHINJO Mayu Title:Kaikan Phrase (Sensual Phrase) Author:SHINJO Mayu ISBN# 4-09-136835-2 Flower Comics, 1997 Woah, I can’t believe they actually made an anime series about this! I really can’t believe it! :) I guess with the fangirl-success of WeiB Kreuz, they figured another anime with a group of really cute bishounen guys who sing (well ok, in WeiB they were asassins, but they sing on the cds..) would be a success ^_^ And the guys in Kaikan Phrase are CUTE! It is just that this manga ...
  • Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, by TANEMURA Arina Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, by TANEMURA Arina Title:Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne Author:TANEMURA Arina ISBN: 4-08-856100-7 Ribon Comics, 1998 Okay, I figured I might as well include this series on my page because I like it so much, and I think I mention it a few times during summaries for other series, most notably the other series by Arina TANEMURA on this site, Ion. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is a magical girl story that is currently running in the shoujo manga monthly Ribon as well as on TV as an anime series. ...
  • Kare – First Love, by MIYASAKA Kaho Kare - First Love, by MIYASAKA Kaho Title:Kare- First Love Author:MIYASAKA Kaho ISBN# 4-09-137064-0 Flower Comics, 2002 This was also bought online at random based on a mangled altavista translation of the plot. I liked the cover, and I have a couple of other titles by the author that I really enjoy, so this seemed like a safe bet. I’m glad I purchased this, it’s a cute story, and the art is nice. The heroine doesn’t really look much like the girl on the cover though. I tend to see ...
  • Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou, by TSUDA Masami Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou, by TSUDA Masami Title:Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou Author:TSUDA Masami ISBN# 4-592-12065-5 Hana to Yume Comics, 1996 Yep, I freely admit this one isn’t even remotely a Random Shoujo Manga ^^ I had already fallen completely in love with the anime version of this series that ran recently in Japan. The anime for Karekano (as this series has been nicknamed) was done by those mega-popular people over at GAINAX, who were responsible for Evangelion. But unlike Eva, in Karekano they have taken a totally different story and ...
  • Kimi wa Petto!, by OGAWA Yayoi Kimi wa Petto!, by OGAWA Yayoi Title:Kimi wa Petto! Author:OGAWA Yayoi ISBN# 4-06-325918-8 Kodansha Comics, 2000 There were two main things that attracted me to this manga- the title, “Kimi wa Petto” – “You’re a Pet” and the fact that the heroine of the story is shown on the cover eating Pocky. Now I am wondering which member of the food-sharing couple pictured here is the pet, and who is the master. Hmmm…. and I really love Pocky.. ok, I’ll get it! Heheh, it’s as simple as that. As ...
  • Lapis Lazuli no Oukan, by KAWASE Natsuna The Lapis Lazuli Crown, by KAWASE Natsuna Title: Lapis Lazuli no Oukan (The Lapis Lazuli Crown) Author: KAWASE Natsuna ISBN# 978-1-401-22120-1 US ISBN# 978-4-592-18063-1 JAPAN Hana to Yume Comics, 2004 (CMX 2009) Hey, look, it’s another English-translated US manga release! Lapis Lazuli no Oukan (The Lapis Lazuli Crown) is a 2-volume manga that was originally published in 2004 by Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume line. Volume 1 was recently released in the US by CMX. I don’t actually own the Japanese volume this time, so I don’t have anything ...
  • Manga Mitai na Koi Shitai! by YAGAMI Chitose Manga Mitai na Koi Shitai!, by YAGAMI Chitose Title:Manga Mitai na Koi Shitai! (Fall in Love Like a Comic) Author:YAGAMI Chitose ISBN: 4-09-138152-9 Ciao Comics, 2003 It was actually the title of this manga that prompted me to buy it. The ‘official’ English title for the series is ‘Fall in Love Like a Comic’, but that translation seems a little odd to me. It should be something more along the lines of ‘I want a love like in a manga!’. As one who reads a lot of shoujo manga, and sees ...
  • Oh! My Brother, by SAITOU Ken Oh! My Brother, by SAITOU Ken Title: Oh! My Brother Author: SAITOU Ken ISBN (JAPAN) ISBN (USA) 978-1401216078 Hana to Yume Comics 2006 CMX Comics (USA) 2009 This series, originally called “With!!” in Japan, is one I have liked for a long time. I own it in Japanese, and was very excited when I heard that CMX would be releasing it in English in the US. This was originally a Hakusensha title that ran in LaLa, which is one of my favorite manga magazines. So many fun series originated in LaLa, including ...
  • Othello, by IKEZAWA Satomi Othello, by IKEZAWA Satomi Title:Othello Author:IKEZAWA Satomi ISBN# 4-06-341249-0 Kodansha Comics, 2001 I picked up this manga after reading a brief description of it on Kodansha’s website. I though the art style was cute, and the story sounds interesting. And indeed, the art is very pretty. It feels so… shoujo ^_^ It’s light and airy, and the female eyes are large and sparkly. I love how this author draws the gothic clothing too :) I feel kind of sorry for the heroine though, and I wonder ...
  • Otona ni Nuts, by FUKUSHIMA Haruka Otona ni Nuts by FUKUSHIMA Haruka Title:Otona ni Nuts Author:FUKUSHIMA Haruka ISBN# 4-06-178958-9 Kodansha Comics, 2001 I actually picked this manga up because at the time, it was the only new volume of random shoujo stuff I could find. ^_^; The cover was cute, and I actually read a little of the back cover and got an idea of what the plot was about. I usually can’t tell much from the summaries on the back of tanoubon because the only stuff I can usually understand in the descriptions is ...

I enjoyed what I read so much that I ended up going back for more :) This is a cute shoujo series that spans at least 7 volumes. It has cute, simple artwork ...
  • Power!!, by SEINO Shizuru Power!!, by SEINO Shizuru Title:Power!! Author:SEINO Shizuru ISBN# 4-06-303176-4 Kodansha Comics, 1999 I had no idea when I bought this that there would be crossdressing in this, really! I mean, this cover looks pretty normal, right? :) Well yeah, here we have another shoujo manga crossdressing story! I can really pick ‘em! This is by an author I have not read before, but the story is pretty cute. The artwork is cute as well, very clean, if a bit plain. And The heroine in this looks ...
  • Suki, Dakara Suki, by CLAMP Suki, Dakara Suki, by CLAMP Title:Suki, Dakara Suki Author:CLAMP ISBN# 4-924780-1 Asuka Comics, 1999 I just couldn’t resist including this manga on my page! It’s one of CLAMP’s most recent, and apparently lesser-known series, ‘Suki. Dakara Suki’. And it is a bit different than most of CLAMP’s other works to date. The art is drawn by Mick NEKOI, who is also the artist for CLAMP’s WISH, Watashi no Suki na Hito, and Card Captor Sakura. However, if I had not already known this was a CLAMP work, I would ...

I really like the artwork here! It feels so warm and gentle, in spite of the fact that she appears to be holding a slug with a crown on. Oh, wait, that is supposed to be a lizard! :) Funny color for a lizard. This series is “Tokage Ouji” a series currently being released in English in the ...
  • Toraware Gokko, by SAKAMOTO Miku Toraware Gokko, by SAKAMOTO Miku Title: Toraware Gokko (Stolen Hearts) Author: SAKAMOTO Miku JAPAN ISBN# 978-4-592-17248-2 Hana to Yume Comics, 2007 USA ISBN# 978-1401-22518 CMX Comics 2010 Oh my gosh, what an absolutely adorable series this is! CMX sent this to me a while ago, and at first I could have sworn I already owned volume 1 in Japanese, so I spent a while searching for that book, but couldn’t find it. Then I managed to misplace this English copy. My apartment is a kind of manga Hellmouth, stuffed with books ...

I actually have the Japanese volumes of this series too, so I can even ...

The school is working on a production of Romeo and Juliet, and the beautiful Makoto is immediately cast to play Juliet. Meanwhile, the one playing Romeo is MIURA Ito. Ito-san, while looking very handsome and dashing, is actually a girl. Makoto finds this hard to ...
