Itazura na Kiss tells the story of Aihara Kotoko, an average girl with average/below-average grades. During her high school entrance ceremony, she falls in love at first sight with Irie Naoki, the top genius at her school. They are complete opposites. Naoki is cold, calm, gifted with a photographic memory, and is all-around perfect at everything he does. Meanwhile, Kotoko is dim, clumsy, but outgoing and enthusiastic. She puts in a lot of effort in everything she does, though things often don't work out her way. After spending 2 years watching Naoki from afar, she finally gets up teh nerve to confess to him by writing him a love letter -- only to have him coldly reject her without even reading the letter!

Kotoko is crushed, and doesn't think live could get much worse, when, naturally, it does. The brand new house she and her single-parent father have just moved in to ends up collapsing during a mild earthquake due to some structural problems. Left homeless, she is forced to follow her father and live at the home of one of his old friends until they can find a new living situation. How awful!

But wait, it gets worse. The old friend of her father? None other than Naoki's father! The house she is moving in to? Naoki's house! While she may have once dreamed of living with her true love Naoki, after his humiliating rejection, this is the most awful thing ever. She is still in love with him, but he ignores her, or treats her in a haughty, condescending manner. But Kotoko is a fighter and a hard worker. She still loves Naoki, and is unable to just turn her emotions on and off. Will being around the clumsy, bubbly Koto melt Ice King Naoki's heart?

This series is Tada Kaoru-sensei's masterwork, spanning 23 volumes. Unfortunately, it was left unfinished, as she passed away after an accident at her home. This anime is notable because it contains an ending for the series, passed on from Tada-sensei's husband, and based on what he claims were her notes and wishes for the ending. Episodes 22-25 take place beyond the ending point in the manga, and provide a lovely ending to a fantastic series.
